What I Did on My Vacation

Anyone who knows X and my affinity for them knows that by “What I Did on My Vacation,” I don’t mean “vacation” at all, any more than does the song of that name. Like the song, I’m using “vacation” to represent a real life that is somewhat less than “real.”

So, what have I been doing since my last post? Actually, nothing much has changed. For the past 2+ years, I’ve continued to live and work in Guadalajara. More about that in subsequent posts.

For now, I’ll limit my post to an explanation (excuse?) as to why I stopped blogging for almost two years. There are a number of reasons, the main ones being that once I began teaching full-time, I felt I had to spend most of my non-classroom time preparing for upcoming classes. Also, the more I settled in here in Guadalajara, the less I felt like an outside observer. The ridiculously treacherous sidewalks, the vast number of good craft beers, the urban phenomenon of dogs on the roof — these things ceased being novelties worth sharing and just became part of my normal existence. Increasingly, I felt that I didn’t want to be an extrañera commenting on Mexican life. I just wanted to live life in Mexico.

What’s changed? Not much, externally; just my attitude. As the Sandburg quote in my blog’s tagline states, I still don’t know where I’m going. But now, two years down the road, I once again feel compelled to comment on the journey.
